The deep V-necked grille pops more against the vehicle’s more svelte body in its current incarnation. The character line that runs down its body crosses with surface lines from nose to tail to add visual intrigue, although we believe the well-muscled Altima that preceded this one appeared more solid.

The Midnight Edition kit adds black trim, heated front seats, a sunroof, and 19-inch wheels to the Altima SR. The 2024 Nissan Altima primary selling point is efficiency, and “slim” is an apt description of its current body. With its sharper bonnet, more prominent grille, and toned bodysides, the Altima is ready to teach a Pilates lesson or two. The inside does not equal the outside energy efficiency, but it also does not justify burying controls under touchscreens or tucking them inconveniently wherever they fit. It’s well-organized, professional, and unpretentious. The 188-horsepower, four-cylinder engine used in most Altimas has stamina but struggles to pull away from the pack in short bursts of speed.

Its belt-and-pulley CVT becomes agitated by requests for rapid ratio changes and dampens any spark generated by the 248-hp turbo-4 option. The Altima’s exceptional ride quality and fuel economy make up for part of this—at least in front-drive, non-turbo guise. Five passengers can fit comfortably in the Altima, and the trunk is roomy enough to transport lots of roll-aboard, computers, and big-box food boxes. The inside is well-groomed, but it doesn’t have the energy of more expensive South Korean-designed sedans. Nissan’s front seats are better than those of its rivals.

Interior

The Altima epitomizes what used to be the pinnacle of the family automobile. Although Nissan’s crossover SUVs have surpassed it in versatility, it still provides enough space for passengers and goods. We rate it a 7 for its well-cushioned front seats and convenient trunk. The Altima has wide front bucket seats with well-shaped backrests and firm bottom cushions that make it easy for front passengers to get in and out of the car.

The driver’s seat is adjustable, and the standard model’s fabric upholstery is upgraded to leather with front-seat heating. Leg and headroom in the back seat ensure that three people of average size will have a pleasant connection at the end of the voyage. It’s slim enough that 6-footers can sit behind 6-footers—and it lacks the Altima’s mechanical sibling, the low-roofed Nissan Maxima, in terms of headroom.

Engine

The 2.5-liter inline-4 engine produces 188 horsepower coupled to a continuously variable gearbox (CVT) that simulates transmission gears using belts and pulleys. The frugal configuration conserves gasoline and absorbs most of the driving exhilaration. It runs pretty quietly, but it takes a long time to get going, and it loses power on long highway passes and when there are many people in the car.

In the Altima SR, shift paddles direct the drivetrain into a set of pre-programmed drive ratios. It can’t make raw power without them, though.The Altima SR’s optional 248-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine replaces the Altima’s previous V-6 engines with a complicated variable-compression technology grafted onto the 4-cylinder. Fuel efficiency suffers, and the engine is incompatible with all-wheel drive. Given the tiny acceleration gains, it’s an unnecessary investment.

The Altima S starts at $25,525 and includes a standard power driver’s seat, automated emergency braking, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and AppleCarPlay. Take the $26,525 Altima SV, and you’ll get a larger screen, larger wheels, and all-wheel drive for an additional $1,400.
